Wallpaper Commissioned for CultureWorks Greater Philadelphia

“Major Jealous,” depicting the Divine Lorraine & “Midtown Vantage,” taken by Julia Blaukopf from the roof of The Philadelphia Building, 1315 Walnut Street.

These two works were commissioned in 2013 by CultureWorks Greater Philadelphia on the one-year anniversary of opening its space in The Philadelphia Building. Major Jealous was inspired by the salvaged seats from Reverend Major Jealous “Father” Divine’s former chapel atop the Divine Lorraine Hotel at Broad and Fairmount Streets. The archival image at the work’s core dates to the late 1980s. Midtown Vantage is composed of multiple images that Julia took from the roof of The Philadelphia Building, 1315 Walnut Street, offering an unusual view of this otherwise familiar part of the city. Julia altered both photographs, applying layers of photographs to achieve a cohesive photo-collage.
